What's In A Name

From Firearms Tactical. Note the date, but keep in mind that Federal's Hydra Shok hasn't undergone an upgrade since that time. In speaking with representatives I'm told that they certainly would like to phase out the 'venerable' round if only dealers and customers would stop ordering them. Perfect example of an old inferior design that keeps on ticking because Willy was wrong. A rose by any other name would not smell as sweet because modern advertising is far too persuasive, and it doesn't hurt that many gun owners are as dumb as a box of rocks. Very little expansion, and underloaded to reduce recoil making it nothing more than a warm .38 Special, these cartridges still sell as fast as Federal can make them because the name remains irresistible.

357 Magnum 158 grain Federal Hydra Shok JHP, 7/14/89:

Test Gun: S&W M13
Barrel Length: 3"
Velocity: 1183 fps
Penetration Bare: 24.70"
Expansion: 0.37
Penetration Clothed: 34.50"
Expansion: 0.46"
