Pakistan Says It Tried to Protect Bhutto

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) - Pakistan's government dismissed former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's charge that high-ranking officials may have tried to kill her, saying Saturday that it had done everything possible to protect her triumphant return from exile.

Bhutto blamed al-Qaida and Taliban militants for the suicide bombing that missed her but killed 136 others Thursday. But she also hinted Friday that followers of former military ruler Gen. Zia ul-Haq - and possibly current government officials - could have been involved.

In a related story, upon learning of this news New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg immediately began sending electronic mailings to leaders of adjoining states, asking him to join him in another ban.

"We really don't need to invite this sort of violence," the statement read, "so I'm asking all elected officials to join me in a ban against exiles returning home, especially those who've irritated Generals that continue to have access to the guns we'd like to ban all people from using."
