May 11, 2006 -- "The 2004 Republican National Convention presented New York City with an age-of-terror public-safety challenge of unprecedented scope - and the NYPD, with characteristic brisk efficiency, did Gotham proud.
Not to hear The New York Times tell it, though. The paper's campaign to smear the NYPD's policing of the event is rising to new levels of absurdity - and now it's enlisted the Civilian Complaint Review Board into the effort.
The paper yesterday published excepts from a CCRB letter to Police Commissioner Ray Kelly - a document leaked to the paper before it was even delivered to the commissioner.
Chairman Hector Gonzalez and Executive Director Florence Finkle blasted cops for "tactics" used during the event. They demand that "the department review the training it provides" for policing demonstrations.
What did the cops do wrong?
Twice, the agency says, they failed to use a bullhorn to issue commands. And once, a cop failed to make clear whether his order to "clear the streets" included sidewalks.
Huh?
As Kelly notes in his justifiably outraged response (which appears on the opposite page), the cops accommodated an enormously complex event - involving a million protesters and, on Aug. 29, the largest rally in the history of American political conventions..."

Read it all if you'd be so kind.
The NY Times detests law enforcement with a purple passion, and has been on the bandwagon to express such hatred ever since the 1999 slaying of Amadou Diallo. Not that they didn't hate cops before that event, but it provided all liberals the bully pulpit from which to excoriate law enforcement, and it's a platform they are loathe to relinquish. Forget the fact that the officers in question did nothing wrong, to the uneducated man in the street it seemed to be an excessive use of deadly force, and once there's a crack, liberals seep in like so much mold and rot.
Yes, the NYPD is heavy with 300 pound 5'2" black and spanish females who are useless at anything besides issuing parking tickets. Yes, they, and their other minority cousins are attitudes waiting to happen, and their IS a severe drinking problem among the younger members of the force. There was a time when law enforcement was a vocation, not a vacation, but the core of the NYPD is about as good as policing gets, and instead of helping to weed out those unfit to serve, liberal rags such as the Times blast away at the safe targets to show their disgust for white men with guns.
And here's Commisioner Kelly's retort.

Someone has to write the parking tickets and direct traffic and answer the phone and do a great number of other things that you don't have to be strong or fast to do.
Would you rather the NYPD take able bodied men out of their radio cars to do this kind of thing?
I'm talking ABOUT the cops who patrol, dammit. The "able bodied" men are bitching a storm because their partners are half their size, can't run, and limpwrist semi-auto's so badly they might as well not even draw them.
What? You thought I was bitching about fat meter maids? Fucking hell, Lem, but you're not only a contrarian but if you are unaware of what affirmative action has done to the nations larger police departments then go somewhere else to learn.
