Since I get at least one email a week on this subject, and most likely lots more but am too lazy to look, here's the deal about Winchester Black Talons.
First off, Winchester hasn't made any since late 1993 so anyone telling you he has some "fresh" black talons is lying.
After NBC led the media frenzy to ban this cartridge, Winchester renamed it the Ranger SXT Series, and the current generation of this round is lots better than the old talons were. Deeper penetration, wider expansion, and greater integrity.
But they don't have an evil sounding name, so all is cool with the hysterical blissninnies that run the mainstream media.
Again, the old Talons were hot stuff for their day, but so was the longbow at one point in time, so forget the hype because these moldy oldies have since been surpassed by virtually every premium self defense round on the market.
There's certainly nothing wrong with purchasing as many boxes as you want for keepsakes of a bygone day, but the price some unscrupulous dealers are asking for these obsolete cartridges is ridiculous, and they are NOT magic bullets.
Find a dealer selling Ranger SXT's in your caliber and consider them 3rd Generation Black Talons. Or Federal HST's, or Remington Golden Sabers, or Speer Gold Dots, or PMC Starfires.
