Sure seems that way. One had to dig to find criticism of director Peter Jackson's "Rings" trilogy...there was lots of it but the MSM wasn't about to publish any...and it appears to be the case with Kong as well.
When Jack Black was first picked to be the new "Driscoll" fandom screamed that he wasn't suited for the part. When Naomi Watts was selected as the blonde in trouble...samey-same. And going all the way to skull island and coming back with a big gorilla instead of a T-Rex or two, or one of each, has always been a duh-moment for the original.
Least we won't see any gay hobbits. I think.
