Girl Cop Shoots Boy Cop

"An off-duty Bronx sergeant was accidentally shot early yesterday by his girlfriend - also a city cop - shortly after the two played a drinking game, police sources said.

Sgt. Kevin Finnigan was shot in the upper back by Officer Carmen Nieves, a Bronx housing cop, at an upstate home they had rented for the weekend, the sources said. Finnigan was taken to a Poughkeepsie hospital where he was in stable condition last night, police said.

"It doesn't look like anything criminal," said a spokesman for the New York State Police.

Finnigan and Nieves got drunk during a game that involved playing cards and drinking booze, the sources said.

They decided to go to bed about 2 a.m., and Nieves was carrying Finnigan's 9-mm. handgun while walking behind him up the stairs, a police source said.

She was somehow trying to secure the weapon when it accidentally went off, she told investigators.

The gun was not an NYPD service weapon, police said.

Finnigan, who works out of the 43rd Precinct, has been on the force about eight years. Nieves has been on the job for less than two years.

The NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating the shooting. No charges were filed."

Where does one even attempt to begin. Okay, so she's walking behind him on the stairs, tries to secure the wespon, and shoots up, and into, his back.

Right. That's an accident. NOT. That is criminal negligence, and were you or I to perform the same juggling act as we fooled with a firearm while drunk we'd be behind bars or out on bail awaiting a trial. If this woman is permitted to remain an officer of the law, then affirmative action is more deeply imbedded into the psyche of the NYPD than ever I imagined.
