All Hands

Just to let you know who the good guys are.

Quantico National Cemetery, Quantico, VA. December 1, 2007.

"Approximately 9AM Saturday morning a truck loaded with over 2,000 Christmas Wreaths pulled up to the gate at the Quantico National Cemetery. The wreaths had come from the Giant Food Store parking lot in Gettysburg, PA where the previous day they were assembled with red bows by members of the Gettysburg Battlefield Detachment of the Marine Corps League, American Legion Post 202, Giant Food employees and volunteers from Gettysburg. Volunteers from the surrounding Virginia countryside starting arriving at the cemetery about 9:30 and by the beginning of the ceremony at 10AM , approximately 200 people were in attendance.

Marine Corps Base Command Chaplain Lawrence Greenslit made a few appropriate remarks followed by John McColley describing how he and Susan came upon the idea to start this annual event. It only took about 20 minutes to have the wreaths placed at over 2,000 gravesites in the first 3 sections of the cemetery and by 11AM the cemetery was once again quiet and appeared the same as before except for the overwhelming sight of 2,000 gravestones adorned with red and green wreaths.

This would be the 2nd Annual National Wreath Project which was founded by John and Susan McColley in memory of their son Marine Corps Sergeant Jonathan Eric McColley of Gettysburg. The wreaths were purchased from Giant Food Store at cost and transportation of the wreaths from Gettysburg to Quantico was generously provided by ABF U-Pack Freight. Everything else was done by volunteers. If you would like more information on this project or would like to make a donation toward purchasing wreaths for next year, please go to sgtmac.org or contact Stan Clark at 717-337-1728."

"Giant" is due a hearty WELL DONE for participating. Thank you to all who've put forth the time and effort.
