Getting A Handle On NYC's Nightlife...

"...the roots of the late-night chaos - like the kind that left a drunk 19-year-old woman, Jennifer Moore, raped and murdered - are complex: easy access to fake IDs; clubs that lure the young; a possibly skimpy police presence; a lack of late-night suburban trains; the smoking ban . . .

There is no one culprit - and no one solution. Thus the need for a dialogue, where these issues can be hashed out thoughtfully and comprehensively."

Bullshit meter is PEGGED whenever I see something like "the need for a dialogue", and who let a lefty writer near the word processor anyway? NY at night, in the RIGHT neighborhoods, is the wildest town imaginable. There are more beautiful women per square foot then a Victoria's Secret runway, more booze and recreational drugs, and more exhibitionism than anyplace not called Paris.

"Dialogue" is not necessary. More police IS. But the cops hate tangling with the sons and daughters of wealthy parents...all who seem to be related to lawyers one way or another...and until the city really gets tough on these brats all the talk in the world isn't going to solve the problem.

Young people, particularly those with unlimited resources, sow wild oats. Big cities have lots of them. The only reason this is making any sort of headline is because an attractive young white woman was kidnapped, raped, then murdered by a particularly heinous black man. If the clubs are forced to check for ID and the neighborhoods are patrolled, then most of the problems are solved, but the simple way out often hides behind MEANINGFUL DIALOGUE.
