Buckshot Patterns...

Range: 15 yards

Ammunition: Winchester Ranger Reduced Recoil; Federal Flight Control Reduced Recoil.

Platform: Remington 870 Express, 18" cylinder-bore barrel.

Federal (the far tighter of the two pictures) is slowly but surely gaining the reputation for the tightest 12 gauge grouping of any shotgun shell, and this particular test is no exception.

Both Winchester and Federal stuff 9 pellets into their Reduced Recoil 00 Buck, and I personally prefer Federal's Vital-Shok with 15 pellets when going with 00. For personal defense I'm unaware of a home-defense situation whereby I'd need to hit something more than 45 feet away, and Vital Shok, from my shotgun, will make a 5.5" hole at that distance with a Modified Cylinder choke. Improved Cylinder opens the spread a tad, but not enough to write home about.
