Two shot over Cartier sunglasses at Hamtramck Festival

"Two men were shot in a robbery attempt Saturday night just as the 27th annual Hamtramck Labor Day Festival was closing down about 10 p.m.

A pair of Cartier sunglasses was snatched from one of the victim and an exchange of gunfire followed, said Hamtramck Detective Michael Szymanski.

"The two victims were walking to their car and took a shortcut through an alley when at least two armed men jumped out," Szymanski said today.

The victims were surrounded by as many as five individuals in the alley, just east of Joseph Campau, behind the city's U.S. Post Office branch at Caniff.

One of the victims, a 23-year-old Detroit man, had a valid license to carry a concealed weapon and returned fire with a 9 mm handgun, Szymanski said. It is not known if the robbers were shot in the volley of fire. About nine to 15 shots were exchanged, he said.

The victim was shot in the leg and released earlier today from Detroit Receiving Hospital.

His friend, a 35-year-old Detroit man, was shot at least once in the thigh, near an artery, Szymanski said. He was still hospitalized this afternoon at Detroit Receiving.

The Hamtramck Labor Day Festival is one of the city's largest events, drawing about 500,000 people through the four days concluding Monday."

Nine to 15 shots with two hitting the good guys, means, I hope, that the muggers ran away riddled to a fair thee well. Any gun is better than no gun but gremlins and goblins simply take too long to keel over let alone expire when hit by a 9 mm. I'm quite sure that the good guy doing the shooting was convinced that shot placement rules over all, and is now re-thinking his priorities after finally seeing the elephant.
