What are the odds...

Of dying from the following, over the course of the average lifetime:

Falls: 1 in 229
Auto: 1 in 228
Drowning: 1 in 1,081
Obstruction of the respiratory tract: 1 in 1,267
Accidental poisoning: 1 in 212
Firearms: 1 in 315
Fire: 1 in 1,471
Knifing: 1 in 1,796
Airplane: 1 in 5,704
Dog bite: 1 in 206,944
Lightning strike: 1 in 56,439

The above stats reflect information gathered from all 50 states, and one may logically conclude that the odds of being shot on the street in certain neighborhoods of Washington D.C. are far greater than, say Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

From what I've seen of Gainesville, Florida, it would appear that the odds of being threatened with bodily harm with an edged instrument or firearm are far greater than the national average, but again, location specific. Some areas are well protected, it being a College town and all, while others are havens for fence climbing hoodlums. Sioux City Iowa on the other hand, has far less of a black and/or minority problem when it comes to violence, but is more dangerous than most neighborhoods in NYC because of the methamphetamine problem.

Believe me, if it weren't for the awful climate we'd have moved to Alaska long ago.
