If You Really MUST Use A 5.56 mm...
Then something along the lines of a Federal 50 grain soft point (222A) is a good choice for personal defense. Not limited to FMJ's, civilian 5.56 and .223 rounds have expansion characteristics that are decent enough, with this particular bullet hitting .50" when fired into ballistic gelatin. 3100 fps from a 20" barrel is nothing to sneeze at, and the pressure wave is sufficient to cause interesting wound channels. The Federal law enforcement line is probably the most extensive of all of the ammunition manufacturers, but bear in mind that LE .223 ammo is designed to penetrate barriers that civilians shouldn't be paying all that much attention to, so always select the round that makes the biggest hole over the one that seems to do a good job through auto glass, etc..
Since we are currently fighting sandfleas without body armor, word has it that this bullet is doing good work. Not that any of our men would use a munition outside of the parameters specified by the Hague Accords, mind you. No.
