A National Institute of Justice survey of felons in state prisons found that 72% of felons who use handguns said they would switch to sawed-off shotguns if handguns became unavailable. (Handgun Bans: Peril or Protection? The Risks and Benefits of Handgun Prohibition (238K), Kopel, David B. Also Wright, James D. and Peter H. Rossi, Armed and Considered Dangerous: A Survey of Felons and their Firearms, Aldine De Gruyter, 1986).
Now during my time in the service, and from all of the literature I've read and all of the people I've spoken to...you know, those who've really been in gun fights as oppossed to those who've put a lot of holes in paper...from doctors and nurses and cops and even a bag guy or two, the mortality rate from being shot with one handgun bullet hovers around 20% or thereabouts. Nothing like you on TV or in the movies of course, where one blast from a relatively tiny little pistol sends the bad guy sprawling, but this is reality and we're stickin' to it.
On the other hand, nearly 80% of injuries sustained from rifle and shotgun ammunitions are fatal, so it is not that much of a stretch to presume that if handguns were not available felons would use even more deadly weapons to commit the crimes the're gonna commit no matter WHAT the bleeding heart liberals say.
Stopping CRIME is the key, sending CRIMINALS to jail for really really long periods of time is the key, imposing the death sentance to at least make them think twice or thrice before discharging that firearm at an innocent person is the key.
Wow. You'd think that with alla them keys even the loony lefties would be capable of unlocking the truth. Nah? Nah.
