Hajj Stampede Kills 345 Pilgrims. At least 345 Muslim pilgrims died in a stampede in Mina, Saudi Arabia, during the annual hajj pilgrimage. The stampede occurred during a ritual in which pilgrims throw stones at pillars. The pilgrims were rushing to complete the ritual by sundown and tripped over their luggage. The hajj has been the scene of such deadly stampedes before, and 76 pilgrims died earlier this month when a hotel collapsed in Mecca.
Fully one-third of the number of people who died in Louisiana as the result of hurricane Katrina. Killed as they ran to throw stones. And if they're claiming the death toll is 345 it's lots more than that, and the injured could surpass 1000.
