Florida has already recognized ENGLISH as the official state language, and I've contacted Senator Martinez concerning this Social Security nonsense. If and when I receive a reply it'll be posted here.

There IS no logical answer to this, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt until hearing from him.

And his answer:

Dear Fits,

"According to Social Security law, noncitizen individuals working in Social Security-covered employment must pay Social Security payroll taxes. This rule includes temporary workers, and persons working in the United States without authorization. I do not support giving Social Security to illegal immigrants.

The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act (S. 2611) would give long term workers who have been in the country for more than five years the option to earn a green card by registering with the government, undergoing criminal and national security background checks, paying a $2,000 fine along with back income, Medicare, and Social Security taxes, learning English, and working for six years while they wait their turn behind the current green card applicants. This is the earned path to legal permanent residency for immigrants that I support.

On May 18, 2006, I joined forty-nine of my colleagues in setting aside an amendment (S. Amdt. 3985) which would have amended S. 2611 so that aliens would not receive Social Security benefits for quarters worked in America as illegal aliens using Social Security numbers that had not been assigned to them. Immigrants who have adjusted their status and paid back Social Security taxes should be given access to earned Social Security benefits.

Again, thank you for sharing your views with me. If you have any additional concerns, please contact me. For more information about issues and activities important to Florida, please sign up for my weekly newsletter at http://martinez.senate.gov."
