"So what does "Cloverfield" offer?"
Bad taste? Dialogue that consists largely of OH MY GOD!!? The anti-cinematic aesthetic that is coming to govern our visual lives? All of the above, plus another slimy monster, engaged in an extreme makeover of Manhattan.

Oh well. The reviews Of "Cloverfield" are in and anyone over the age of 12 is aghast. Shame that the creators didn't study up a little on disaster-movie 101. The hero strives mightily against all odds to find a way to WIN. Running is permissible but WINNING is paramount.
Then again, since it's an Abrams production and all the LOST characters ever do is whine "Where are the GUNS? Who has the GUNS?", then pick slugs from one another's arms with pen knives since we all know that ammunition only penetrates a half inch or thereabouts.
