The age of consent in the state of Delaware from 1880 to 1920 was 7 years old. An American male in the state of Delaware could marry and have sex with a 7 year old girl prior to 1920. The age of consent in 27 US states during this period was 10 years of age while 12 states recognized the age of consent at 12.
I have the birth certificates for my grandmother and my mother. Both women were born in Gadsden, Alabama. My grandmother was born in March 1914. My mother was born in September 1927. The difference in age is 13 years, 9 months. Given a 9 month pregnancy, my grandmother would have been about 12 years, 9 months old at the time of conception.
Since the age of consent in the state of Alabama in 1914 was 10 years of age, there it was legal for a 12 year old to marry and conceive a child in 1914.
