"Dear Fitz,
Can you shoot a gun under the water?"
Yes, I can. You should not. It can be very bad for the ear drums, and some modern hollowpoints are prone to opening before leaving the barrel, so this is not a good thing. Handguns can emulate a bang-stick-type defense against a marine predator, but the muzzle would need contact the fish because even a high velocity 9 mm, or .40 caliber will only travel 10 or 15 feet while submerged. People who do such a thing they allow the weapon to become totaly laden with water, cycling the action and removing as much air as possible before discharge. 30,000 or so PSI punching out of a rather small aperture and into a liquid can be dangerous, especially with a less than robust firearm.
