July 6, 2006 -- CLEVELAND - Even when the Yankees win they lose.
After punishing the Indians 11-3 last night behind Melky Cabrera's grand slam and career-high five RBIs to end a two-game slide, the Yankees' enthusiasm was tempered by an abdominal/oblique injury to Johnny Damon.
"I plan to be back in a couple of days," said Damon, who exited for Bubba Crosby in the top of the third. "I won't be in there [tonight]."
Yankee Spring Training is a leisurely joke. The players arrive out of shape, are allowed to waltz around in the Forida sun until they get some of the kinks out, and everyone heads north a dive or slide away from the disabled list.
Year after year, the older players..meaning the stars...can do as they please in the Spring and then spend a month or two of the season nursing their boo-boos because there is nothing resembling a true conditioning program.
If that was MY investment I'd be severely pissed. There are many reasons that talented ballplayers have the worst years of their professional lives after becoming Yanks, and being then staying out of shape just happens to be one of them, but they all point towards the worst manager in baseball.
