Rugers New Mini-14 Target
Had a chance to shoot a new Ruger Mini-14 Target rifle, and was impressed. Forget the MSRP of $995; if you can't get one for under $800 out the door then look for a better deal because they are out there. Ruger has been busily tooting the horn on how they beat a gaggle full of AR's during an industry sporting shoot, and while I've neither the time nor inclination to dig deeper into such braggadocio, I can say that for the aforementioned price one would have to look hard to find a similar rifle that'd punch 1 and a half inch holes at 100 yards. Scoped and from a bench but of course.
Since my ergonomics and pistol-gripped long guns don't exactly go hand in hand, I'd choose the Mini...with a 30 round mag...for home defense over any dollar for dollar AR variant around. That's if I was a .223 fan which I am not so further discussion is moot. Yes, top of the line AR's are tack drivers and nothing will make this Ruger as accurate as a $2+K Stoner. But Ruger has come a long way in reinventing the Mini, and were they to drop the price to a more reasonable $650 or so they couldn't keep them on the shelves.
And there simple IS no recoil from an 8 and a half pound rifle clipping out those poodle killer .223's.
