Cloverfield: Something Has Found Us

"On the eve of his departure for Japan, Rob (Michael Stahl-David) sees his going-away party as an opportunity to confess unresolved feelings and tie up loose ends. His agenda takes an unexpected turn when a jolt shakes the revelers. The crowd quiets down to watch news reports of an earthquake, then rushes to the roof to assess the damage. A fireball explodes on the distant horizon. A power failure follows. Confusion gives way to panic as the partygoers stumble through the blackout and into the streets.
Amid the human screams and one inhuman roar, Rob and his friends must traverse a landscape that has changed, overtaken by something otherworldly, terrifying, monstrous…"

When I first saw the trailer it seemed a wee bit "Blair Witch" for my tastes. Hiding the monster works with low budget movies, whose producers try telling us is far more frightening than actually seeing a creature, but psst...we don't go to movies to use our own imagination, we go to see what cannot be seen in real life.

But the folks behind Cloverfield insist that there is indeed a monstrous entity lurking behind those skyscrapers it seems to be gouging holes in. We haven't seen it yet because they want the buzz to grow until we can't help ourselves and MUST venture to the local teenplex, despite the call of manners and sophistication demanding otherwise.

"Why hasn't there been an American Godzilla?" the creators of Cloverfield asked. Um, there was, actually. May even have heard of it. King Kong preceded the Nipponese lizard by decades, and our suspension of disbelief needs more coaxing but thats another story.

You can see one of the trailers here, and Googling "Cloverfield" will I am sure take you to many other reference points.

Oh and by the way, I've hooked up with a couple of pictures of the monster if anyone is interested.
