Marine Lance Corporal Steve Szwydek was killed while fighting for our freedom on Oct 20,05, in Iraq. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, with full Military Honors.
A young friend of L/Cpl Szwydek, Jamie Bryner, thought it would be a good idea to have a memorial for his Marine Hero friend, so he set out to make this memorial happen.
On July 9, at 1400 (2 PM), in the tiny town of Warfordsburg, PA, this memorial will be dedicated. Steve's mother, Nancy is unsure how many folks would show up, in this little town, to honor her son and the efforts of Jamie Bryner, but has asked that the word be spread.
There will be 2 Light Armored Vehicles (LAV) from Company D 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Quantico,VA, a Huey Gunship and an Attack Cobra Helicopter from HML/A 775 out of Johnstown, PA. HML/A is Helicopter Marine Light/Attack.
L/Cpl Szwydek was in the 2 Battalion 2 Marine Regiment, 2/2, 2nd Marine Division out of Camp Lejeune, NC., and many Marines from L/Cpl Szwydek's outfit will be there for this Memorial. LtGen Jim Amos, the Commanding General of the II Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) is sending the Navy Chaplain of the II MEF along with his personal regrets to Nancy Szwydek that his schedule would not allow him to attend.
Everyone is cordially invited to "Come to America" on 9 July, at 1400, in Warfordsburg. PA.
The Memorial is at Southern Fulton High School, located at Exit 168 and Interstate 70 in Pennsylvania.. This is just north of the Maryland-Pennsylvania state line. At the exit stop sign, go west on Rt. 522 towards Warfordsburg. At the next stop sign, turn left and go 1/4 mile to the Southern Fulton High School sign on your left. Turn left into that parking lot.
