According to my August issue of North American Hunter, handgun sales for the 4th Quarter of 2006 were up a whopping 56.4%, long guns 11.4%, and ammunition 21.2%.
So much for the lying liberal SOB's who continue to voice that a decline in both long gun and handgun sales prove that America's love-affair with firearms is waning. I cannot speak for long guns as it seems that my local shops have as many junkers and clunkers as always dearly priced for a slow sale, but GLOCK for one says it may be as many as 50K units on backorder and that is probably the reason for one of the local businesses pricing handguns as if they were forged in gold. All of the shops report a brisk trade in handguns, so that of course means they couldn't care less about the concept of offering decent products at a fair price because the suckers are coming in hot and heavy. I myself have taken to dealing more and more with private owners instead of being asked for the birth certificate of my first born as collateral for the right to touch a gun in the display case.
Sooner or later this will level itself out into a buyers market, it always does, and I'll feel a great deal of satisfaction gawking at those dusty old relics with newly attached price tags but still won't buy anything from the so-called 2nd Amendment devotees who gouged us every chance they could. Best price for a "Fair" graded, 2nd generation G-21 is still hovering around $500 before tax, and strangely enough I see the same guns sitting in the same place visit after visit. So do lots of other non-buyers as we gather outside to mumble "What are they nuts?", and it becomes more and more tempting to acquire an FFL just to cut out the usurious middle men who make used car dealers look like captains of industry.
