"A man who had just registered a pistol with the Redford Police Department accidentally shot and wounded himself in the parking lot outside the police station Thursday morning.
The 34-year-old township resident suffered a bullet wound to his left calf and was treated at St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia, according to a township police report. He was released Thursday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The man told police he left the Redford station after registering the gun, got into his car and put a bullet in the .32-caliber semiautomatic pistol, then "slammed" the magazine into the handle. The gun discharged; the man said he hadn't pulled or bumped the trigger."
He should be happy that the slam fire (maybe) didn't happen with a .380.
In Michigan, one does not register guns per say but MUST report to the local police station for a SAFETY INSPECTION of any newly purchased firearm.
Oops.
Perhaps, just perhaps the next time he'll at least point the weapon in a SAFE direction before topping-off.
