Winchester Ammunition Develops Reduced Recoil .460 S&W

"For 2008, Winchester Ammunition offers a reduced recoil load for the .460 S&W Magnum, allowing shooters more pleasurable target sessions and hunting options. A proven big bore hunting caliber, the .460 S&W provides excellent energy transfer and deep penetration. The new Winchester Super-X® .460 S&W Reduced Recoil round features a 250-grain jacketed hollow point bullet, a muzzle velocity of 1,450 feet per second (fps) and an impressive 1,517 foot-pounds of muzzle energy.

Engineered to offer nearly 50-percent reduction in recoil compared to full power loads, while still retaining enough energy for hunting at normal handgun distances, the new .460 S&W Reduced Recoil load is an ideal choice for deer-sized game, predators and target shooting. The more manageable recoil also allows hunters the benefit of quicker follow-up shots.

The new .460 Super-X S&W Reduced Recoil features:
- 250-grain jacketed hollow point bullet
- More manageable recoil for quicker follow-up shots
- Muzzle velocity of 1,450 fps - Muzzle energy of 1,157 foot-pounds
- Suited for deer-sized game, predators and target shooting

This happens on a somewhat regular basis. The Shooting Wire gets an advertising blurb from a major manufacturer and doesn't check the numbers. In doing the math, the 1157 foot-pounds is correct, but it begs the question as to why a firearm that can shoot 460, .454 Casull, and .45 Colt needs an less expensive Reduced Recoil 460 when there already ARE cheaper ways to shoot the gun. And we don't need the period in front of 460 since it is not the dimension of the cartridge but the brand name of this particular round (and sure, while we're at it let's bring some truth in advertising to the 44 magnum too, and lots others). Anyways, both the Casull and Colt munitions will crank out 1157 foot-pounds at less cost to the shooter, but I suppose Winchester didn't have anything better to do at the time than help S&W boost the disappointing sales from their newest X-Frame.

By the way, Winny; make us a 460 load with 1517 foot-pounds AND half the recoil of a standard round and that my friends will sell like hotcakes. But you can keep the .45 Colt for twice the price version.
