Mark Goldblatt on Hollywood bravery...

"Prior to and during Sunday night’s Academy Awards, Hollywood luminaries were busy patting themselves on the back for their courage in honoring films depicting two gay cowboys as star-crossed lovers, a gay writer as a soulful artist, a transsexual as a responsible parent, a Palestinian suicide bomber as a thoughtful, conscience-driven activist, greedy oil company executives as, well, greedy oil company executives, and Senator Joe McCarthy as (gasp) a threat to American civil liberties. As George Clooney, who had a hand in both the oil-industry-bashing Syriana and the McCarthy-bashing Good Night, and Good Luck, recently noted, “People in Hollywood do seem to be getting more comfortable with making these sorts of movies now. People are becoming braver."

Yes indeed. Such bravery. Spending all that money to make films no one will pay to see IS an effort of heroic proportion. Carefully omitting the darker side of Palestine, Homosexuality, and Communism is not as easy as it looks for those brave film makers. Imagine how careful, how caring, how utterly precise to the infinite power they must be so as not to offend anyone. Anyone except most of the country, that is. Anyone outside of Hollywood.

I suppose it is brave to act the fool and not care when the world bears witness. Then again, that's what exhibitionists do. And perverts, and raincoat flashers. They don't care what YOU think, because it's all about them. Hey, look at me, little girl. Used to be they'd ask you to promise not to tell about their dirty little deeds. Now they want you to pass the word along.

Disgusting chareltons. But oh so brave.

Right.
