NRA AND NEW ORLEANS REACH AGREEMENT ON RETURN OF FIREARMS CONFISCATED DURING KATRINA
NRA has negotiated an agreement with New Orleans regarding the firearms seized from lawful owners during and after Hurricane Katrina. The issue is pending before the federal court in the case NRA v. Mayor Ray Nagin. On March 15, 2006, lawyers for both sides informed the court that positive settlement negotiations were occurring.
After months of stonewalling, the city of New Orleans has now admitted that it holds a number of firearms, and that owners of firearms which may have been confiscated may contact the Property and Evidence Division of the New Orleans Police Department in any of the following ways: by telephone, at (504) 658-5503; by mail, sent to: New Orleans Police Department, Property and Evidence, 400 North Jefferson Davis Parkway, New Orleans, LA 70119; or in person at the same address. Please be patient as records are incomplete, and the police are currently understaffed.
Records are most accessible if you can supply your gun's serial number. Claims can be made based on proof of ownership, or, lacking such documents, an affidavit that the item belongs to you. For those who go through the above process, whether successfully or unsuccessfully, NRA would be interested in hearing your comments on what occurred. Please contact NRA Grassroots at 800-392-8683 or by email at https://secure.nraila.org/Contact.aspx.

So then. The NO-PD remains understaffed. Guess those vouchers for free trips to Vegas must still be valid.
Here's where I applaud the NRA for doing something that didn't entail spending ten million dollars defending drunken West Virginian deer hunters caught poaching. The sight of that old lady being thrown to the floor of her kitchen as the police were disarming her, troubles me still. Out of state crooks made a bundle because they had what the NO-PD didn't have. A communication system that worked, and guts. The cops ran or went looking for old people to disarm. Then outright stole whatever weapons struck their fancy.
Good luck getting back anything that was of real value. Most of the local car dealerships STILL can't find half their inventory.

When a cop askes you if you have a gun the proper answer is "no".
And isn't that a shame? It almost seems as if I awoke one day to find the lunatics prancing gleefully about the asylum and laden down with ALL the keys. I spent my adult life so sheltered it was almost criminal. It was go here, go there, pay little attention to society because the folks would never let the commies take over. I settled down in Iowa a few years back just to get away from the ratrace. Thought it'd be a great place to regain my sanity.
Wrong. It was a liberal hell on earth, all the upper midwest was, and I finally got the frig out.
I'm not dumb enough to expect most cops to be smart or care about the oaths they take. Its no longer a vocation but a way to earn some decent enough money for someone otherwise suited to run a fast food window. Every law enforcement office MUST swear and avow to protect the Constitution. Today that means "unless otherwise informed."
