RIP Thomas Curry

"Retired Police Officer Thomas Curry, who enjoyed a distinguished career despite being wounded by political radicals in 1971, died yesterday at age 73.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly hailed Curry for his "remarkable courage in the face of an assassination attempt."

"On behalf of the New York City Police Department, I want to express my condolences to the family and friends of Police Officer Thomas Curry, who survived horrific wounds in the 1971 machine-gun shooting of he and his partner, Police Officer Nicholas Binetti," Kelly said.

The pair were guarding the 404 Riverside Drive home of Manhattan District Attorney Frank Hogan on May 19, when two men in a blue car - allegedly members of the Black Liberation Army - opened fire, seriously injuring the officers.

On the same day, Police Officers Waverly Jones and Joseph Piagentini also were ambushed and shot to death.

Despite their injuries, Curry and Binetti stayed on the force until reaching the mandatory retirement age of 63 in 1997.

Dhoruba al-Mujahid bin Wahad, formerly known as Richard Moore, field secretary for the Black Panthers New York chapter, was convicted in 1973 of attempted murder.

After serving 17 years in prison, Wahad's conviction was overturned in 1990.

The city ended up paying him $490,000 in a wrongful-imprisonment settlement."

Moore was wrongfully convicted because the FBI that Bill Clinton so loves withheld evidence. Evidence such as a sworn statement saying that Moore didn't participate in the shooting, that came from someone who tipped the Feds about him to begin with. Doesn't mean he was innocent. Did mean that the Feds wanted a slam dunk and cherrypicked what they released to Moore's attorney's. The worse thing is the possibility that the real shooter was never apprehended. Moore was a panther, Moore lived on the shady-side of the law, Moore probably should have done a lot of hard time anyway. But there's a good chance that someone else shot up those cops and is out there still laughing about it.

Thanks to the FBI.
