I've had a Marlin 1894 Lever Action chambered in .44 magnum for about 20 years. Back in the days when Super-Vel was the only game in town with regards to high-steppin' magnum loadings, the rifle was accurate with 240-270 grainers but there are lots of boutique manufacturers nowadays and therein lies the rub.
The 1/38" twist is simply too slowwwwwwww for bullets in excess of 300 grains with any giddyup to speak of, and that means accuracy is minute of brontosaurus.
Anyway, I'm going to have the thing rebarreled. I'm certainly no expert with regards to such things, but those who are recommend a 1/20" twist so that's what it'll be. Crazy Jay had his old Marlin new-tubed (18"), then chrono'd Double-Tap .44 mag WFN 320's @ 1714 fps. For kinetic energy buffs thats 2070 ft-lbs, a magnificent number for the caliber in question. The old gal was always a slick shooter and this will put some extra starch in her, good enough to handle anything in this neck of the woods for sure.
