I've long been an admirer of Mr. Taffin. There. I said it. There's a gun writer who doesn't suck. Codrea excluded 'cause he's a Blogger too and doesn't just offer information but puts his money where his mouth is.

And yes; I've heard tell of trying to crank a 300 grainer to 1200 fps or thereabouts and the results weren't pretty.
