NRA Sues Nagin'

Received the following in an email from the NRA:

Fairfax, VA-The National Rifle Association (NRA ) has filed a motion for contempt against the City of New Orleans, the mayor and the acting chief of police for failure to comply with a temporary restraining order, handed down September 12, 2005, ordering an end to all illegal gun confiscations.

"With looters, rapists and other thugs running rampant in New Orleans, Ray Nagin issued an order to disarm all law-abiding citizens," declared Wayne LaPierre, NRA executive vice president. "With no law enforcement and 911 available, he left the victims vulnerable by stripping away their only means of defending themselves and their loved ones. Now Ray Nagin thinks he's above the law, and that's just wrong."
Attorneys for NRA have exhausted all efforts to cooperate with the defendants, Mayor Nagin and Chief Riley, who repeatedly ignored the court's permanent restraining order against their illegal gun confiscations.

"Ray Nagin is a colossal disappointment," said Chris W. Cox, NRA chief lobbyist. "During a federally declared emergency, he abused his power and abandoned the very people he was sworn to protect. He took away the victims' freedom and their basic means of self-defense during an ill-fated and perilous time."
The motion also includes an order that all seized firearms must be returned to their rightful owners.

I have to snicker whenever I hear one gentle soul or another discussing "the law" as it applies to firearms. "The law" is whatever the policeman, judge, district attorney, or politician feels it should be at whatever time of day they're asked, and it is oft times incumbent upon the individual citizen to engage council in order to maintain whatever right "the law" has taken from him.
Case in point: In New Jersey it is illegal for private citizens to use hollowpoint ammunitions in self defense. "The law" took that to mean that the mere possession of said ammunition was illegal, and anyone found to have "dum-dums" in their weapon, on their person, or in their domicile was committing a criminal act. Cases have actually gone to trial before a less dimwitted than usual defense attorney...and in one case even a juror...discovered what "the law" actually said. Bottom line is the fact that you CAN own hollowpoints, you CAN use them for target practice, you CAN keep your weapon loaded with them, but should you fire such ammo into another person an additional year of sentencing is tacked on PER round employed.
But let the average cop on the street discover that you own a hollowpoint bullet and the chances are he's taking you for a ride. It is then up to you to correct this mistake, and that can prove to be a costly endeavor.
Similar things happened in New Orleans. The police took it upon themselves to make "the law" as they went along, and some gun owners are still awaiting the return of their legally owned firearms. Fat chance. If the guns were interesting enough the cops have long since taken them as their own possessions, or sold them.
Goes on every day. The 2nd Amendment is trod upon with impunity because the majority of the cops and the courts don't believe private citizens should own guns. Please support the NRA, or the organization of your choice that is in the fight to protect our right to keep and bear arms.
