George Will And The Unwashed Masses...

"The new paradigm is of behavior-driven poverty that results from individuals' nonmaterial deficits. It results from a scarcity of certain habits and mores - punctuality, hygiene, industriousness, deferral of gratification, etc. - that are not developed in disorganized homes."

I could not agree more. What George does, on occasion and for me at least, is to call attention to the real reasons that precipitate the slovenly behavior of certain peoples. And, as he continues on to say, you don't cure poverty by throwing money at it because that reinforces many of the bad habits that created the situation to begin with. We know what poverty is, but no one has ever come up with a workable plan to cure it. Trillions spent since the days of LBJ, and most of it so unwisely as to prolong the problem. Education CAN be one of the keys, but of course the teachers unions are against private schools for they prefer their huddled masses of odious children to remain huddled and odious, because that, you see, is job security.
