Friday Movie Reviews: "Jarhead"

"Some criticize Jarhead for ambivalence and ambiguity. But that's what Swofford's experience was about."-- Mike Ward, RICHMOND.COM

"For those bemoaning the lack of 'action,' I'm sure whatever flicks come out after the end of the current Iraq War...will be much more, uh, 'entertaining.'"-- Pete Vonder Haar, FILM THREAT

"Although it's well made and entertaining enough to recommend, the actual point of the film is...well, hard to find."-- John Venable, SUPERCALA.COM

"While beautifully crafted from a purely visual standpoint, the film remains structurally chaotic and emotionally remote."-- Frank Swietek, ONE GUY'S OPINION

"Jarhead is the most unconventional anti-war film ever made..."-- Cole Smithey, COLESMITHEY.COM

"Never comes close to expressing the insanity of war itself."-- Nicholas Schager, NICK SCHAGER FILM PROJECT

"The tagline for Jarhead is 'Welcome to the Suck.' Truth in advertising must be making a comeback."-- Dustin Putman, THEMOVIEBOY.COM

"Regardless of how lush and fully realized the imagery is, Jarhead as a movie is stuck permanently in basic training."-- Brian Orndorf, EFILMCRITIC.COM

"Jarhead will leave many viewers satisfied and others scratching their heads. But everybody will be asking questions."-- Philip Wuntch, DALLAS MORNING NEWS

"As much as we intellectually admire Jarhead, it's a cold film that only sporadically makes the kind of emotional connection it's after."-- Kenneth Turan, LOS ANGELES TIMES

"[A] sweltering and pristine portrait of one Marine's experience of the first Persian Gulf war."-- Jan Stuart, NEWSDAY

"Jarhead is a movie that walks up to some of the most urgent and painful issues of our present circumstance, clears its throat loudly and says nothing."-- A.O. Scott, NEW YORK TIMES

We intentionally left out any reviews referencing Jamie Foxx, who ALWAYS receives the obligatory gush-gush for the obligatory reasons.

Can't I be even a LITTLE pc? I'm working on it.

But can't an old jarhead give HIS take on the movie?

Okay. Full Metal Jacket was the worst war movie ever made. Stanley Kubrick was the worst director of actors that ever lived.

Jarhead isn't as bad.
