"In Philadelphia, gun violence has reached near-epidemic levels. People are getting shot and killed at a pace not seen in years. On average, one person is dying by bullet every single day.

Police are being targeted, too. Many have been shot at, and in the past seven weeks, six officers have been hit … all in the line of duty. One was even killed. He responded to a call at a donut shop, not knowing the disturbed person inside was armed and ready to fire. The officer had his weapon unholstered and at his side when he walked through the front door, and the would-be robber became an assassin, putting a bullet in the 54-year-old policeman's head.

The suspect was caught the next day, the same day Officer Charles Cassidy died.

I've been to Philly to cover many of the recent shootings, including the murders of two retired cops, who were working as armored car guards and were shot at close range by a career criminal looking for a big score.

Every time we go to Philadelphia we wind up at police headquarters and I find the soon-to-be-retired police commissioner Sylvester Johnson wearily answering the same questions, seemingly powerless to do much to stop the violence.

They haven't given up, of course. The department has special teams of highly trained veterans targeting high crime areas with increased patrols and aggressive stops and searches designed to limit or discourage drug and gang activity and to keep corners clear.

They've reached out to community and church leaders, launching campaigns to get more civilians involved in keeping neighborhoods safe.

Arrests and seizures are at an all-time high, but Johnson knows he can't arrest his way out of the problem, and he can't talk the criminals out of stealing or dealing or robbing or killing either.

He says there are simply too many illegal handguns on the street, and too many troubled kids with severely limited resources and opportunities who see few options. Johnson wants federal help; programs to help the young and the poor find a better future. He added that tougher gun laws are needed to make it far more difficult to buy a pistol on the street, especially for the16-year-old recently arrested for allegedly shooting two undercover narcotics cops. It was a .357 Magnum. He allegedly opened fire out the ground floor window of a crack house, hitting one cop in the hip and the other in the leg as they tried to use a battering ram to break down the door.

"Homeland Security is important," the Commissioner likes to say, "but so is Hometown Security."

Should have thought of THAT years ago, Chief. Back when the liberal politicians were raping your communities of even the remotest shred of common decency. Didn't take omniscience to see the trouble to come, hell, who WASN'T talking about it when you were a cop on the beat?

Ten percent of the state's population happens to be be black. and many live in Philadelphia, Chief. 44% of the population of Philadelphia is unemployed, Chief, and your city has one of the highest dropout rates in the nation, making it one of the least educated communities in America. Unemployed, undereducated people using illegal street drugs usually leads to one thing, Chief. I'm speaking to you and not the idiot "blogger" who wrote this magnificently stupid tale of woe, but since you believe that guns can be violent you share some of the idiotic blame as well, Chief.

So why aren't you asking the teaching community why they cannot seem to educate the kids, and the parents and relatives of the bad kids why they are making so many bad kids.

Instead, you are pushing for "tighter gun laws", which is just another way of saying that you'd like to target the people who DON'T commit any crimes because you CAN'T catch the ones that do. Before Rudy tackled similar problems in similar neighborhoods in New York, people were saying just what you are saying, Chief. That you can't arrest your way out of this mess. And isn't it ironic that you profess to be unable to arrest more people but want more laws to create more criminals? How does one handle THAT dilemma, Chief?

But lets tell the truth, Chief. You want safer criminals. Just like your liberal politicians who wanted to create a sub-race of people, you yourself want a sub-race of crooks. Taking away the guns from the ones not using them to commit murder makes good headlines because it seems like something is being done, isn't that right, Chief?

If 10% of the states population is committing nearly 80% of the states murder, wouldn't you want to look into THAT, Chief? But instead, you're asking the federal government to pump even more money into the welfare rolls, thinking that more cash equals less crime. But you know the reality, Chief. You know that more money would mean more not less guns, don't you? But you can't arrest yourself out of this problem, oh no. That'd skewer the prison statistics even more unevenly than it already is.

Bottom line is the fact that yours is one of the most difficult law enforcement jobs in the country. And that you need to get tougher with the violent criminals but cannot. That you do not have nearly as many good cops as you need because you've been forced into affirmative action hirings that have led to a lot of officers capable of shuffling paperwork and nowhere near enough street cops.

It's a dead giveaway when someone begins complaining how hard their job is, Chief. So this is a great time to retire, but you'll be replaced by another token law enforcement officer who will begin his complaints soon after taking the oath. Here's something, however, that you might want to pass along to him:

Inanimate objects cannot be violent. Stop worrying about all those legal firearms and concentrate on sending the owners of the illegal ones away to prison for the rest of their lives.

"When kids hear Santa Claus bellow, “Ho, ho, ho,” is their first thought prostitution?

That concern has prompted an attempt to gag the traditional greeting, and many Santas are now fighting back.

According to the Sydney Daily Telegraph, Santas across Australia are rebelling against attempts to change their saying to a more politically correct, “ha, ha, ha.”

It all started when the recruitment firm Westaff – which has offices both in the United States and Australia – told its Christmas trainees that the “ho, ho, ho” phrase could frighten children and possibly be derogatory to women.

“Westaff has been a provider of quality caring Santas for over 40 years,” Westaff’s national Santa coordinator Sari Hegarty wrote to stores via e-mail.

“Part of our advice to our Santas is that they should be mindful of children having their first Santa experience. We ask our Santas to try techniques such as lowering their tone of voice and using ‘ha, ha, ha’ to encourage the children to come forward and meet Santa. We wish you and your family a very merry Christmas.”

The directions have prompted some Santa trainees to quit the program.

One told the Daily Telegraph he was taught not to use “ho, ho, ho” because it was too close to the American slang for prostitute."

Guess they won't be featuring any stories from I-Da-Ho, no matter how otherwise newsworthy.

Clinton Says No to Licenses for Illegals

"Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton on Wednesday came out against granting driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, after weeks of pressure in the presidential race to take a position on a now-failed ID plan from her home state governor.

Clinton has faced criticism from candidates in both parties for her noncommittal answers on New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer's attempt to allow illegal immigrants in his state to receive driver's licenses. Spitzer abandoned the effort Wednesday.

"I support Governor Spitzer's decision today to withdraw his proposal," Clinton said in a statement. "As president, I will not support driver's licenses for undocumented people and will press for comprehensive immigration reform that deals with all of the issues around illegal immigration including border security and fixing our broken system."

Clinton stumbled when asked about the issue during a Democratic debate two weeks ago, and her new position comes the day before another debate where opponents are expected to raise the issue again.

Spitzer met with New York lawmakers in Washington on Wednesday, and conceded that there was too much public opposition to his plan. Clinton did not attend the meeting.

"It does not take a stethoscope to hear the pulse of New Yorkers on this topic," he said.

The Democratic governor introduced the plan two months ago with the goal of increased security, safer roads and an opportunity to bring immigrants "out of the shadows." Opponents charged the scheme would make it easier for would-be terrorists to get identification, and make the country less safe.

The decision is another example of the roadblocks high-profile immigration reforms have faced this year. Less than five months ago, Congress failed to pass legislation that would legalize as many as 12 million unlawful immigrants and fortify the border with Mexico..."

High profile immigration reforms? Translation: Amnesty.

We the people have pretty much let it be known that there will be no amnesty. After days of not catching his show...its the lisp, the lisp drives me crazy...I tuned into Rush Limbaugh and of course he was taking credit for pointing out to us that Hillary's slip was showing. Most bloggers beat him by a day or two in predicting the ins and outs of the political spectrum, and that isn't to say he does not have a finger on the collective liberal pulse because he has but 3 hours a day to make HIS point and we have 24. Yet if ever a messenger needed whacking its is he, for he was beaten to the punch and hardly participated at all in the pummeling of Mrs. William Jefferson Clinton, who according to unnamed sources STILL calls herself Rodham on HER drivers license.

If this hilarious imbroglio accomplished one thing it was to familiarize Mrs. William with the laws of NY State, and since a Senator should know something about what goes on at home, this is a good thing. We all of us know that she is learning on the fly, why even the other day she learned that poor, two-job-working single mom waitresses expect this thing the little people refer to as a TIP.

To Inflate Politicians. Perhaps now she'll pay more attention to those diminutive citizens and their true wants, needs, and desires. If that happens she might even begin to develop her own sense of right and wrong, her very own core value system that will prevent such future snafus.

The whole drivers license deal stunned her because she was in effect asked if she favored a form of amnesty, and the seething liberal within her couldn't help but say YES. And she has not come out and said that it was a bad idea, only that she supports her Governor's withdrawal of the proposal, which by the way wasn't a proposal at all and if the local motor vehicle honchos had not raised holy hells this might have snuck through and been a done deal before any of us heard tell of it.

Even Rush.

It was over 2 weeks ago when Mrs. Clinton first said that Governor Spitzer's plan was all that and a bag of chips. Yesterday she said that she, as President, would not support such measures. In the middle she said, "yes, no, maybe, yes, no."

Lets see if Blitzer can get a reading on how she feels TODAY when he has his chance with her this evening. Even though he's been warned.

And how embarrassing is that? None of the other candidates are complaining but the Queen isn't happy so her retinue puts the media on notice.

Hells bells, woman, but stop worrying; they don't call it the Clinton News Network for nothing.

Congressional Panel Calls Chinese Spying Greatest Threat to U.S. Technology

WASHINGTON — "A congressional advisory panel said Thursday that Chinese spying in America represents the greatest threat to U.S. technology and recommended lawmakers consider financing counterintelligence efforts meant to stop China from stealing U.S. manufacturing expertise.

The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission also said in its annual report to Congress that small and medium U.S. manufacturers, which represent more than half the manufacturing jobs in America, "face the full brunt of China's unfair trade practices, including currency manipulation and illegal subsidies for Chinese exports."

China's economic policies create a trade relationship that is "severely out of balance" in China's favor, said the commission, which Congress set up in 2000 to investigate and report on U.S.-China issues.

Carolyn Bartholomew, the commission's chairwoman, told reporters that "China's interest in moving toward a free market economy is not just stalling but is actually now reversing course."

The commission's Democratic and Republican appointees have begun meeting with congressional staff and lawmakers to discuss the report's 42 recommendations.

In the report, the commission said China's spies allow Chinese companies to get new technology "without the necessity of investing time or money to perform research." Chinese espionage was said to be straining U.S. counterintelligence officials and helping China's military modernization.

While the report praised China for some economic progress this year, improvements were undertaken "with great hesitancy and, even then, only with the prodding of other nations and the World Trade Organization."

China, it said, "maintains a preference for authoritarian controls over its economy" and has done too little to police widespread copyright piracy of foreign goods sold in China.

The commission also faulted China for keeping its currency artificially low. American manufacturers have long complained that Beijing's low currency makes Chinese goods cheaper in the United States and American products more expensive in China.

China's dependence on coal, lack of energy efficiency and poor enforcement of environmental regulations, the report said, "are creating devastating environmental effects that extend throughout the region and beyond to the United States."

The commission said tensions between Taiwan and China have created an "emotionally charged standoff that risks armed conflict if not carefully managed by both sides. Such a conflict could involve the United States."

The U.S. has hinted it would go to war to protect Taiwan if nuclear-armed China were to attack. China claims Taiwan as its own and vows to attack at any declaration of independence by the island's leaders.

The report also described what it said was China's tight control over information distribution, which allows Beijing "to manage and manipulate the perceptions of the Chinese people, often promoting nationalism and xenophobia.

Beijing, the report said, uses its control of the media to influence its perception in the U.S.; that could endanger U.S. citizens if reports on food and product safety and disease outbreaks are manipulated."

"Tight control over information distribution." "...Control of the media to influence its perception..."

Sounds an awful lot like our own liberal Jurassic Press. Manipulate, color, and at times even manufacture the news in order to promote a political agenda.

MUSHARRAF: THE TOLSTOY OF THE ZULUS

"If Republicans end up with a divided convention between Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani, I say we pick Gen. Pervez Musharraf.

Musharraf has declared emergency rule in Pakistan, shut down the media and sent Supreme Court justices home. What's not to like about a guy who orders policemen to beat up lawyers? I bet he has a good plan on illegal immigration, too.

The entire history of Pakistan is this: There are lots of crazy people living there, they have nuclear weapons, and any Pakistani leader who prevents the crazies from getting the nukes is George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison all rolled into one.

We didn't hear much about Musharraf -- save for B. Hussein Obama's threat to bomb Pakistan without informing Musharraf -- until the last few weeks.

Musharraf has been a crucial ally of ours since Sept. 12, 2001. His loyal friendship to the United States while governing a country that is loyal to al-Qaida might prove dispiriting to the terrorists. So, until recently, the media mostly confined stories about Musharraf to page A-18.

Now, with the surge in Iraq working, Democrats are completely demoralized. Al-Qaida was counting on them. (We know the surge in Iraq is working because it is no longer front page news.)

In a tape released in early September, Osama bin Laden bitterly complained, "You elected the Democratic Party for this purpose" -- of ending the war in Iraq –- "but the Democrats haven't made a move worth mentioning."

It isn't enough for the media to drop all mentions of the surge or to subsidize ads denouncing Gen. David Petraeus as "General Betray Us." (He is betraying liberals by winning the war for America, the enemy of liberals.) They need to stir up trouble for the U.S. someplace else in the world.

On Sept. 20, Osama bin Laden cued liberals by issuing another tape demanding Musharraf's ouster. The Democrats and the media quickly followed suit.

Weeks later, The New York Times editorial page called on "masses of Pakistanis" to participate in "peaceful demonstrations" against Musharraf, which would be like calling on masses of Pakistanis to engage in daily bathing (The New York Times editorial page being the most effective way to communicate with the Pakistani masses). Most of the editorial was a mash note to that troublesome woman Benazir Bhutto for demanding democracy in the land of the deranged.

Media darling Bhutto returned to Pakistan after fleeing the country following her conviction for corruption as prime minister. Her conviction was later overturned by the corrupt Pakistani Supreme Court, leaving me to ponder, which is worse: being convicted of corruption in a Pakistani court or being exonerated of corruption in a Pakistani court? She was again convicted in a Swiss court of money laundering.

The media adore Bhutto because she went to Harvard and Oxford, which I consider two more strikes against her. A degree from Harvard is prima facie evidence that she's on the side of the terrorists. I note that Bhutto demonstrates her own deep commitment to democracy by giving herself the title "chairperson for life" of the Pakistan Peoples Party.

Liberals hysterically opposed our imposing a democracy on Iraq and despise Nouri al-Maliki, the democratically elected leader of Iraq. Say, has Maliki ever been convicted in a Swiss court of money laundering?

Compared to Pakistan, imposing democracy in Iraq is like imposing democracy in Darien, Conn. But in Iraq, liberals prefer an anti-American dictator, like Saddam Hussein. Only in Pakistan do liberals yearn for pure democracy.

You wouldn't know it to read the headlines, but Musharraf has not staged a military coup. In fact, he was re-elected -- in a landslide -- just weeks ago under Pakistan's own parliamentary system.

But the Pakistani Supreme Court, like our own Supreme Court, believes it is above the president and refused to acknowledge Musharraf's election on the grounds that he is disqualified because he is still wearing a military uniform. That's when Musharraf sent them home.

Musharraf's election was certainly more legitimate than that of Syrian president Bashar Assad (with whom every leading Democrat has had a photo-op) or Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (adjunct professor at Columbia University) or Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez (loon).

Where were the headlines like this week's Economist's ("Time's up, Mr. Musharraf") about those lovable rogues? They hate America, so they can stay.

The last time liberals were this enthusiastic about popular rule in some Third World country was in 1979, when they were gushing about Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in Iran. Professor Richard Falk of Princeton University assured liberals in a 1979 New York Times op-ed that the "depiction of Khomeini as fanatical, reactionary, and the bearer of crude prejudices seems certainly and happily false."

I'm no clock-watcher, but it's been 28 years; I don't think Falk is going to be issuing an apology.

Falk cheerfully concluded that the fanatical Muslim leaders in Iran "may yet provide us with a desperately needed model of humane government for a Third World country."

And just look at all the wonderful things Khomeini did for Iran!

How might popular rule turn out in Pakistan? As Saul Bellow rhetorically said of multiculturalism, "Who is the Tolstoy of the Zulus?"

Pakistan is a country where local Islamic courts order women to be raped as punishment for the crimes of their male relatives. Among the Islamists' bill of particulars against Musharraf is the fact that he has promoted the Women's Protection Bill, which would punish rape, rather than using it as a device for social control.

According to The Boston Globe, the most common form of homosexuality in Pakistan –- punishable by death –- is pederasty.

Pakistan doesn't need Adlai Stevenson right now. It needs Mustafa Kemal Ataturk to impose military rule and drag a country of Islamic savages into the 19th century, as Ataturk did in Turkey. Pakistan's Ataturk is Gen. Musharraf.

To try to force democracy on the differing "I hate America" factions in Pakistan at this stage would be worse than Jimmy Carter's abandonment of the Shah in 1979. It would result in what former assistant secretary of state Edward Djerejian called: "one man, one vote, one time."

The difference is: Instead of scimitars, this den of al-Qaida-supporting pederasts will have nukes."

It all boils down to a simple concept.

If a nations leader wants to be and remain friends with the United States, liberals will soon call for his head.

This is why they're having so much angst over their beloved Fwance. The French Prez is a bonafide ami of America, but Fwance is from whence all things un-American are a'borned or USED to be, so how in all hells can this happen?

Man, Toad Arrested in Drug Bust

"Missouri police made a peculiar drug bust this week when they caught a man with a toad he allegedly used to get high, KMBC-TV in Kansas City reported Tuesday.

David Theiss, 21, of Kansas City, was accused of having a Colorado River Toad for the purpose of using it as a hallucinogenic, KMBC-TV reported.

"People used to do it all the time, but it got faded out awhile, but came back as a fad. Not a smart one," animal expert Danny Snyder told KMBC-TV. "The toxins in it can kill a lot of stuff."

Both Theiss and the toad were taken into custody. While Theiss was released on bond, the toad remains detained at a police crime lab, and at this point in time it is unclear if it faces any charges.

Local officers said that during times past when many such instances would occur on a regular basis, lawyers for those charged with Felony Toad Lick would ask to examine the creature in question, and in order to hold a toad against its will certain charges would be filed to classify it as an amphibian of interest.

Spanish-Language Radio Station Slams Police for Describing Suspect as 'Hispanic'

"An Arizona Spanish-language radio station is blasting a local police department for what it says is racial profiling: describing the suspect in a series of child rapes as "Hispanic."

Police are offering $25,000 for any information leading to an arrest in the case of the "Chandler Rapist," who began assaulting victims in Chandler, Ariz., in June 2006.

The suspect is described as Hispanic, 28 to 40 years old, short with a muscular build, dark hair and hazel or brown eyes.

Phoenix news talk radio station, KNUV 1190 AM, has complained to the police department about the description, claiming that "Hispanic" refers to an ethnicity, not a race.

"Hispanic could be white, it could be black, it could be dark-skinned complexion," said Mayra Nieves, vice president of programming. "We Hispanics see it that way."

Police won't budge. They say they are following normal procedures for releasing information based on victims' descriptions. Five victims between the ages of 12 and 14 have described their assailant as Hispanic.

The rapist usually strikes in the morning, when his victims' parents, usually a single mother or father, leave for work. The rapist attacks when he knows the parent won't be home, threatening his victims with a weapon before he sexually assaults them, said police spokesman Sgt. Rick Griner..."

Then again, we COULD put all of the welfare recipients to work doing office jobs for the military as a way to earn their stipend.

Strike that. There are far too many of them. How's about enlisting waitresses working two jobs and complaining that... ?

A 'Tip' for Hillary: Admit Your Mistakes

"For Hillary Clinton last week, the problem appeared obvious. A Clinton speech used the plight of a waitress -- a single mom in Iowa, Anita Esterday, working two jobs to make ends meet.

Clinton was painted as not being personally concerned about Anita’s plight enough to even leave a tip.

After the allegations surfaced, the Clinton campaign responded that it had left a $100 tip on a $157 tab, with the incident turning into a debate between the diner staff and Clinton’s campaign.

The truth will probably never be completely clear. Supposedly the tip had been put on a credit card, but that later turned out to be false. The campaign then claimed that it had left cash that must have been misplaced. But things didn’t look good when Adam Crawford, the diner’s manager, said, "Where Hillary was sitting, there was no tip left," and the campaign was unwilling to identify or let the press talk to the staffer who left the tip.

The campaign appeared to concede the whole incident when a Clinton staffer showed up the next day to give Esterday a tip, but it could have simply been an honest attempt to make amends.

The Daily Kos noted on Friday: "A silly issue? Sure. But a mistake . . . ." The Australian Broadcasting Corporation referred to the whole thing as "trivialities."

But it is not a silly or trivial issue. The perceived cover-ups surely gave the story much more coverage and made what might have just been a simple oversight look much worse, and the issue is a lot deeper than just Clinton using the waitress as a campaign prop."

That Kos would stick up for a Clinton is no surprise, and in Australia people don't leave tips so of course they wouldn't find this unusual.

In reality, it is par for the course that a liberal would be tight with his or her money because they do after all get their kicks from spending OUR money. Single mom's working 2 jobs aren't going to get a boost from a Bill or Hillary...liberals as a group contribute far less to charities so why would anyone EXPECT them to pay from their own pocket?

The fun is in making US pay.

4 Organ Recipients Infected With HIV

There are new questions about the safety -- and risks -- of organ donation. As CBS 2 Medical Editor Mary Ann Childers reports, this comes after four patients at three Chicago hospitals got HIV – which causes AIDS – after receiving infected donor organs.

This is the first known instance of HIV transmission from an infected donor in the U.S. in more than 20 years. Gift of Hope says the organs tested negative for HIV and hepatitis C because it takes 22 days from the time a person is infected until their immune system forms antibodies blood tests can detect. The donor was tested to rule out the presence of any transmissible disease. Tests for HIV, hepatitis and other conditions came back negative, possibly because the donor had acquired the infections in the last three weeks before death, or because the tests might not have picked up the diseases.

Scientists claim to clone monkey embryos

NEW YORK - Scientists in Oregon say they've reached the long-sought goal of cloning monkey embryos and extracting stem cells from them, a potentially major step toward doing the same thing in people.

The research has not been published yet or confirmed by other scientists. But if true, it offers fresh hope in field that has been marked by frustration and even fraud. The claim of a similar breakthrough with human embryos by a South Korean scientist in 2004 turned out to be false.

The hope is that one day, such a procedure could be used to create transplant tissue that's genetically matched to an ailing patient. Because stem cells can form all types of tissue, the approach might one day help treat conditions like diabetes and spinal cord injury without fear of rejection by the patient's body.

Scientists have tried for years to clone monkey embryos and extract stem cells because monkeys are more closely related to humans than other lab animals are. So monkey work has been expected to give hints about how to do this in people.

Man in India Marries Dog

NEW DELHI — Selva Kumar had been hounded for 15 years by the memory of a horrible act he'd committed as a teenager.

As an 18-year-old he had stoned and clubbed to death two dogs he found engaged in mating. He then hung their carcasses from a tree.

That's when his personal suffering began.

"After that my legs and hands got paralyzed and I lost hearing in one ear," Kumar told the Hindustan Times newspaper.

Kumar, now 33 and living in the southern Indian district of Sivaganga, could no longer take the physical pain of the "dog curse," so he sought the advice of an astrologer.

Her cure for his maladies?

"Marry a dog."

Which is just what Kumar did on Sunday.

In a ceremony befitting a beautiful Indian bride, the bitch, a former 10-year-old stray named "Selvi," was bathed and dressed in a ceremonial orange sari with a garland of flowers adorning her neck. She was then brought to the temple in Tamil Nadu to be presented to Kumar by members of his family.

Kumar, sitting beside his bride, recited his mariage vows, declaring, "I will take care of it until its death." Then, the "couple" was declared married.

Deeply superstitious people in rural India sometimes organize weddings to dogs and other animals, believing it can ward off certain curses.

The Hindustan Times reported Kumar's family hosted a feast — while Selvi dined on a bun.

Thompson Urges Expanded Military

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson called for a million-member military ground force and more funding to equip and care for service members and veterans in a speech Tuesday at a military college in this early presidential primary state.

The former Tennessee senator and actor also told a crowd at The Citadel that he wants more modern battle equipment on the ground, in the air and on the water to help revitalize the nation's security.

"With 20th century equipment in a 21st century war, our material support for our troops has not matched the demands we have placed on them," Thompson said to applause from hundreds of cadets, staff and visitors at the school's basketball arena. "We've been asking too few troops to do too much for too long."

"Some would say this plan is too much and too big," Thompson said. "I don't believe that's the case, not at all."

November 13, 2007 -- "LAST weekend's news coverage of our veterans was welcome, but deceptive. The "mainstream media" honored aging heroes and noted the debt we owe to today's wounded warriors - but deftly avoided in-depth coverage from Iraq. Why? Because things are going annoyingly well.

All those reporters, editors and producers who predicted - longed for - an American defeat have moved on to more pressing strategic issues, such as O.J.'s latest shenanigans.

Oh, if you turned to the inner pages of the "leading" newspapers, you found grudging mention of the fact that roadside-bomb attacks are down by half and indirect-fire attacks by three-quarters while the number of suicide bombings has plummeted.

Far fewer Iraqi civilians are dying at the hands of extremists. U.S. and Coalition casualty rates have fallen dramatically. The situation has changed so unmistakably and so swiftly that we should be reading proud headlines daily.

Where are they? Is it really so painful for all those war-porno journos to accept that our military - and the Iraqis - may have turned the situation around? Shouldn't we read and see and hear a bit of praise for today's soldiers and the prog- ress they're making?

The media's new trick is to concentrate coverage on our wounded, mouthing platitudes while using military amputees as props to suggest that, no matter what happens in Iraq, everything's still a disaster.

God knows, I sympathize with - and respect - those who've sacrificed life or limb in our country's service. I just hate to see them used as political tools.

How many of you really believe that those perfectly coiffed reporters care about our soldiers and their families? Does anyone think those news anchors will invite any Marines in wheelchairs home for Thanksgiving?"

"Nothing Much Happened Today" isn't the most glamorous of headlines, but Ralph is spot on when arguing that if day after day we were bombarded with the slightest indication that things weren't going all that swell, there SHOULD be some thought given to how the peace is being won. 18-yr.-old carrying hairbrush shot 13 times by cops

A Brooklyn teen carrying a hairbrush was shot 13 times and killed by police Monday night after his mother told the officers he had a gun, authorities said.

Five cops, including two sergeants and a detective, opened fire on the youth, who had been arguing with his mother and standing on a first-floor window ledge screaming and acting irrationally, police and witnesses said.

"Basically, it's suicide by cop," said a police source.

Cops and witnesses said the mother of 18-year-old Khiel Coppin was standing outside the building at 590 Gates Ave. when officers arrived.

"He's got a gun! He's got a gun! He's going to kill you," the mother told cops, according to the police source.

Cops said Coppin, who had a history of mental problems, was standing on the first-floor ledge of apartment 1-D in Bedford-Stuyvesant, concealing something under his shirt.

"They were shouting, 'Halt! Halt! Halt!'" a police source said of the moments before cops opened fire on the teenager.

Instead of freezing, the teen jumped off the ledge and climbed over a gate 10 feet from the officers, who yelled, "Drop it!"

But the youth continued toward cops, prompting them to fire at least 20 rounds, hitting him 13 times, a source said. As the teen collapsed, he dropped the hairbrush, the source said.

"He's 10 feet from the cops, he sees their guns out, he hears his mother screaming, 'He's got a gun," and he keeps coming," said a police source. "It's like he didn't care."

Five men fired 20 rounds at 10' and missed 7 times. Ten feet. Bet the farm that at least half of the hits weren't COM. NYC may despise guns but it should at least teach law enforcement their proper use. Then again, surrounded by the likes of the following...

"One witness, Precious Blood, 16, said she heard the teen's mother tell cops, "He's got a gun."

"She thought he had gone crazy," Blood said.

But Andre Sanchez, 17, said it appeared the young man was trying to put up his hands when he was shot.

"Police told him to get down. He wouldn't get down. He hopped out the window and started walking to them. He dropped the brush to the ground and started lifting his hands and that's when the cops shot him," Sanchez said.

'They handcuffed him and started pulling on him even though he was shot.'"

Burglary suspect killed in North Miami

"An auto repair shop owner confronted two teens early Saturday in North Miami, shooting and killing one of them as they both attempted to burglarize the business that also doubles as his home.

The 15-year-old North Miami boy, Paul-Marc Petit, , died from the gunshot wound. The other suspect, who is also 15, was apprehended and charged with felony murder, burglary and theft. He was not identified by police.

The owner of Knight Auto Repair, 685 NW 121st St., whose name was not released by police, is not expected to be charged in connection with the shooting because he was acting in self-defense, according to authorities.

Police said the shop owner spotted the two burglary suspects on his property about 2 a.m. The teens were not armed.

''He heard noise,'' said Sgt. Trevor Shinn of the North Miami Investigations Unit, ``They were removing property from the vehicles. There was a confrontation; he shot at them.''

Alabama: Sober Diabetic Man Tasered, Accused of DUI

"Police in Ozark, Alabama on Tuesday used a taser on a sober man who was having a diabetic seizure. A trio of police cruisers were called to the scene of a black Nissan truck and trailer pulled over on the side of the road near the intersection of Highway 231 and Marley Mill Road at around 4pm. James Bludsworth, 54, a man with no criminal record, was was slumped over behind the wheel. Because of his condition he was not responsive to police commands.

Police then fired tasers at the sick man three times. A police officer now says that he smelled alcohol on Bludsworth, even though later testing showed no trace of alcohol in his system. Ozark Police Chief Myron Williams also claims the sick man was "combative." Instead of taking Bludsworth to medical care he was booked at Dale County Jail and charged with resisting arrest and driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI). Bludsworth has no recollection of the incident and is free on $1000 bond."

Mary Land Senate Overrides Governor On Police Sale Of Guns...

"The Maryland Senate voted unanimously yesterday to override Gov. Martin O'Malley's veto of a bill that would let police departments dispose of their guns by selling them to a manufacturer.

The bill was approved unanimously this year in both the Senate and the House of Delegates. No one testified against it during a Senate committee hearing. State law requires police departments to either destroy the guns or sell them only to another police agency or an active or retired officer.

O'Malley stated that "police weapons should not be potentially made available outside of the law enforcement community." The House of Delegates would need to get a three-fifths' vote for the General Assembly to override the veto."

New Jersey bans the use of hollowpoints. New Jersey prohibits concealed carry for those not affiliated with law enforcement. The purchase of each and every gun requires its own license, a license that can and does take up to 2 months to receive. Local law enforcement has the final say on issuing said licenses, and needs NO reason for a turn-down. You can only carry a weapon to and from a certified range, and the gun must be disassembled in the trunk of your vehicle within a lockable case and apart from its ammunition.

All of THESE laws and more, the sportsmen and women of New Jersey find acceptable.

What this story and those like it prove behind a shadow of a doubt is the power of the citizen to make a difference. Advertising dollars did not matter when it came down to voting for the politicians who swore they wouldn't screw with blackpowder season.

The very fact that this writer remains blissfully unawares of how truly lame all of this sounds...giving kudos to the people who tolerate some of the absolute WORST gun control laws in the nation...is quite par for the course in NJ.

Gun-cleaning kit prompts evacuation at Baylor

"Officials at the Baylor College of Medicine ordered an evacuation of the campus today after a gun-cleaning kit and an empty box of shells were discovered in a classroom.

An assistant professor was about to teach a class about 1:30 p.m. when she spotted a paper bag on a side table containing the cleaning kit and the empty box.

"There was oil on it (the cleaning kit) so obviously it had been used," said Dr. Peter Traber, president of the medical school.

Campus security officers were notified about the discovery. Within the hour, the alert was announced over Baylor's public address system as automatic e-mail and voice mail messages were relayed to students and staffers, officials said.

"We sent them home and told them the campus would be closed until the (Wednesday) morning," Traber said.

Minutes after the public address warning was sounded, a man told security officers that the items belonged to him and were left over from a weekend sporting trip.

"We were able to question him and search the appropriate areas," Traber said.

At no time was there ever a gun on the campus, officials said.

Baylor College officials declined to identify the person who left the items in the classroom but said he is not facing any disciplinary measures."

"We've yet to add cleaning paraphernalia to the list of banned items, ' Dr. Traber continued, 'but in the light of recent events it would be prudent to disallow such cleaning kits on campus as students, faculty, and staff members might get the wrong idea about our zero-tolerance program with regards to guns. Our psych professors are in agreement that the very sight of a cleaning swab or even worse, the presence of an empty shell, could very well send the more sensitive students into shock whereby they could harm themselves while frantically fleeing from an unattended cartridge case that in and of itself does most assuredly bespeak violence and death.

"It is simply horrific to imagine pile upon pile of trampled young people, and as long as I am in charge I promise that this will not happen."

Cleveland records 119th homicide

A 17-year-old youth found shot to death today outside his home on East 152nd Street became Cleveland's 119th homicide of the year, matching last year's total.

With nearly two months left in the year, Cleveland is on pace to record the most homicides in the city since the mid-1990s and continues a spike upward that started in 2005.

The latest homicide typifies many of the killings this year, in which teenagers have been either the killers or the victims. Brandon Griffin's body was found dead in the shrubbery in front of the home where he lived with a relative. Police believe he was shot the night before after an altercation.

The relative did not see the body in the darkness Wednesday night and the shrubbery hid the body most of Thursday.

Cleveland Police spokesman Thomas Stacho said he could not point to a specific reason for the rise in murders.

"There's clearly too many guns on the street," Stacho said. "And too many are too quick to go to guns to settle a dispute."

But Stacho also said that violent crime overall - crimes including murders, rape, assaults and some robberies - have dropped 15 percent from last year.

Brandon was just the latest victim of a violent year that brought several high profile killings including 12-year-old Asteve "Cookie" Thomas who was hit by a stray bullet from a shootout Sept. 1 as she walked from a trip to the candy store; a triple murder by a Cleveland firefighter who flew into a rage over July 4 fireworks; and a Cleveland man accused of killing a teen he says tried to rob him..."

See what we been saying all along? Even self-defense shootings...BY CIVILIANS ONLY, of course...are lumped together with homicides. Technically of course killing someone is a homicide, but when a cop does it it doesn't make the list.

And this sure seems like a bad time to call a halt to executions, doesn't it?

There are 187 inmates on Death Row in Ohio. Currently there are 185 men (97 Black, 80 White, 4 Hispanic, and 4 other) and 2 white females on Death Row. (To date, Ohio has executed a total of 369 convicted murderers.)

Ohio has the following racial breakdown:

85 percent white, 11.5 percent black, 1.9 percent Hispanic, 1.2 percent Asian.

11.5% of the population accounting for 52% of the murders.

So of course they blame the guns.

GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR BILL TO CURB GUN VIOLENCE TARGETING LAW ENFORCEMENT

PHILADELPHIA – "Governor Edward G. Rendell today joined Pennsylvania House Speaker Dennis O’Brien in announcing their joint support for legislation that would create a 20-year mandatory minimum sentence for anyone who discharges a firearm with the intent to injure, maim or kill a law enforcement officer.

The legislation expands upon House Bill 2467, which passed the House in 2006 establishing a 10-year mandatory minimum sentence for injury to a police officer.

“The need for Speaker O’Brien’s legislation has been tragically demonstrated by the last five weeks in Philadelphia where we have seen three city police officers shot and wounded and one, Charles Cassidy, shot and killed,” Governor Rendell said. “This carnage is overwhelming evidence of the need for swift and sure punishment that acts as a deterrent to armed assault on our police officers.”

“Let the word go out that in Pennsylvania anyone who fires a gun at a police officer is going to jail for at least two decades,” said Speaker O’Brien. “We should, and we must, give maximum protection to those who put their lives on the line protecting us.”

Whoa a sec there, Hoss, you've got is ass backwards. The people who protect us are not drafted to these jobs. They join knowing full well of the dangers involved. Why in the name of all thats holy are there not harsh sentences for anyone shooting anyone without just cause?

A law like this is of course unconstitutional, for the courts have opined that one CAN use deadly force to resist an unlawful arrest, so you can imagine when all else fails that an otherwise innocent person could be sent to prison for 20 years even if his use of a firearm was justified.

This imaginary world where the lives of the police are more important than the lives of the citizens they've SWORN to protect and defend is in one helluva screwed up universe, now isn't it.

The dangerous streets do not appear to stir you to action, Governor, but when someone in a uniform faces "carnage" it is somehow worse?

Boggles.

Man uses stun gun on Atlanta carjacker, gets shot

ATLANTA - "A man tried to use a stun gun to fend off a carjacker and ended up being shot five times.

The man was taken to the hospital Wednesday with wounds to his abdomen and leg but was expected to survive, Atlanta police Sgt. Lisa Keyes said.

The man was driving a minivan in southeast Atlanta when he was confronted by a carjacker at an intersection. The carjacker jumped in, told the man to drive and demanded money, police said.

While trying to reach for his money, the man also pulled out his stun gun and shocked the carjacker.

But the carjacker reacted by shooting the man at least five times, Keyes said. The van, which was still moving, crashed into a tree and the carjacker ran away.

The victim, whose name was not immediately released, was conscious and talking to investigators when he was taken to the hospital, Keyes said.

Keyes stressed the importance simply giving up the vehicle when confronted by a carjacker.

"Make the situation safe for you," she said. "You know you have to get away from that person. Just try to give the car up."

Begging your pardon, ma'am, but this suggests that YOU would do the same. Someone wants your patrol vehicle, you'd give it up? Hell, it isn't even your personal property so I guess you'd have to.

And please now; civilian powered tasers are nowhere near as powerful as the ones used by law enforcement so have a care when deciding to fight back against Curly the Carjacker.

Tasers are used by the police in order to make people compliant enough to cuff. Were someone to approach Sgt. Lisa with the same request you can bet the farm she isn't going for the taser.

The right tool for the job. ANGERING a felon is not the smartest thing to do.

Italian Soccer Fan Gunned Down By Police During Scuffle, Fans Riot

ROME — "A police officer accidentally shot and killed a soccer fan Sunday while trying to break up a fight by a Tuscan highway between supporters of rival teams, authorities said. Enraged by the killing, hundreds of fans rioted in Rome, attacking a police station.

Fans stormed the yard of a police station near the Rome's Olympic Stadium, hurled stones at passing police cars, and smashed windows at the nearby Italian Olympic Committee headquarters.

Hundreds of youths, many with their faces covered by scarves and ski masks, dragged metal barricades and trash bins to block off one end of a bridge spanning the Tiber near the station. The rioters smashed a window in the police station and set a police vehicle on fire inside the gate.

Another fatal "accident". Lets have a look at how it went down...

"Arezzo police, reading a statement, said officers in two patrol cars who were stopped on the opposite side of the highway turned on their sirens when they "heard yelling, screaming" and realized the occupants of three cars in the rest area were fighting.

When the clash continued, the police fired warning shots into the air. All three cars began to return the highway, police said, adding that one of the occupants of the vehicles "took a shot." The car with Gabrielle Sandri in it drove a few miles to the next exit to seek medical help. An ambulance crew was unable to revive him, police said.

They described the officer who fired the shots as a veteran but didn't provide the officer's name, and, adding that the case was under investigation, refused to answer questions.

Clashes between rival fans at rest stops are common in Italy.

Sky quoted witnesses as saying the other two cars were vans carrying Juventus fans from Naples heading to a match in Parma.

The Italian soccer federation postponed the Inter-Lazio game, and security officials in Rome canceled a Sunday night match between Roma and Cagliari. Other games on Sunday started 10 minutes late, with players and referees wearing black armbands.

Premier Romano Prodi, who was attending Mass when he was informed of the death, called fan violence "very worrisome."

Its worrisome when kids get into shoving matches with one another over a sporting event, but no mention of the police shooting them?

"The killing also prompted clashes between fans and police in Bergamo, where AC Milan was playing Atalanta. The match was stopped after seven minutes when Atalanta fans tried to break through a barrier and storm onto the field."

Anyone with but a modicum of familiarity with firearms understands that guns are not designed to be warning devices. Un-holstering the weapon then placing ones finger on the trigger means deadly force is intended, and when deadly force then occurs it is absolute nonsense to refer to it as an accident.

Firing warning shots went out with cattle drives in the late 1800's. Such behavior can result in far more harm than good, and we simply must return to the simple understanding that guns are meant to kill people, and in instances such as this it is no accident when they do. There was a time when I would have been the first one to dissuade insurrection against sworn officers of the law. This happened in Italy. Here the constabulary bursts into homes and kills grandmothers and calls such behavior accidental as well. All the Italians, or ANY of the European nations need do is to begin handing down serious jailtime to unruly fans. Europe has but one spectator sport of value to the fans so of course every game is serious to them, but hooliganism should be frowned upon and met with swift disciplinary action.

Regarding the clashes between citizens and the police, THEIR constitutions do not guarantee the people the RIGHT to fight deadly force with deadly force so you can imagine the frustration of living in police states.

While others couldn't stand the thought of her at all? While still others disliked Bill as well? So its Bill or Hillary and thats it? No dissent?

In a rambling, semi-coherent article that was supposed to be about the possibility of a Constitutional amendment forbidding family members from succeeding one another as President, the Times Online made it seem as if there were no people disliking both Clinton's. A distinct possibility one would imagine, seeing as how William Jefferson Clinton only received 43% of the popular vote while running for HIS first term.

This is what liberal rags do, and quite well. Lure us with the hope of an open minded dialog then turn it into a campaign ad for democrats.

To make this appear that it isn't really HER fault, this thinly disguised Clinton commercial would have us believe that we are so very much against dynasty's...we're not...that poor Hillary might be having problems because Bill was there before her. Forget the fact that in 2004 no democrat wanted Bill Clinton anywhere NEAR a close race for fear of rejuvenating bad feelings about his appalling, disgusting, and disgraceful Presidency.

I was going to start this by admitting the embarrassment of being "thanked" for doing nothing but the job I asked to do and offering how unnecessary it is but thats selfish. Everyone thanks everyone these days and for the slightest thing and I'm not speaking of being mannerly, the gentility afforded someone passing the salt, but of the kudos bestowed for doing anything vaguely passable. Self satisfaction for a job done as close to the best of ones ability was all the rage for the past several thousands of years, but no matter how much the most stoic of us may remonstrate to the contrary, as of late we've come to expect a certain degree of notoriety for walking and chewing gum without taking a header.

Where was I...ah yeah, trying not to sound like an old grouch; actions you see are far more preferable than words so if you can employ a qualified veteran then please do so. Try to take the time to understand how the proximity to grief and gore may have temporarily removed the place setting from in front of the seat the human race dines upon, but save that seat for decorums return. In other words, forget how he or she is acting now because it'll get better I promise. War can only be conducted by men who've let loose the beast but the vast majority of the time the leash remains intact, just somewhat longer. Reeling it back in is where they'll need the most help.

Happy Veterans Day to all you knuckleheads who thought wow, this is gonna be radical. Without you we'd be destitute and en yoked.
