Long Distance Chrono's...

Asked my good friend Jay to run some chronograph's for me, with the following results: (Note: Velocity was measured approximately 15' from the barrel, and the rounds were fired into soaked newspaper.)

7.62X39 caliber, 123 grain FMJ fired from a Romanian AK-47 (20" barrel): 2265 fps. Average size of retrieved bullet: .30"

Winchester 30-30, 150 grain Winchester Super-X Hollowpoint (18.5" Marlin 1894): 2362 fps. Average size of retrieved bullet: .41"

Double-Tap .40 caliber, 155 grain Gold Dot Hollowpoint (18" Hi-Point): 2119 fps. Average size of retrieved bullet: .86"

Of the three bullets tested, the only one designed specifically for use against human aggressors is of course the Gold Dot, and the velocity for such a round can be increased substantially, but for now let's stick with what we have. The AK bullets are in-and-out FMJ's and to my knowledge no one manufactures a 30-30 to be used on anything besides deer, or deer-sized game animals.

The AK and 30-30 ammunitions have a flatter trajectory, but for encounters up to 75-100 yards I do believe I'd select a round that opens to about the size of a quarter, and leave the rest for putting meat on the table.

PS: Jay was supposed to shoot several other cartridges, but for the umpteenth time shot his chrony all to shit before he could get a chance to.

Also, as a disclaimer of sorts it should be noted that all measurements are from Cornfucker Jay, and while I have great faith in his ability to add subtract, divide, and multiply anything that can be rounded off by ten fingers and ten toes, do not take any of the above as gospel.

Just kidding, partner. Really.
