FAU shooting suspect arrested at culinary school

"A Palm Beach County man squeezed off two shots during a fight at an overnight party in a Florida Atlantic University apartment Wednesday, striking no one in particular but paralyzing the campus for nearly 12 hours during finals week, police said.

Authorities traced Omar Graham, 23, to Johnson & Wales' College of Culinary Arts campus in North Miami, where they arrested him.

No one was seriously hurt in the early morning shooting, and it is likely no one was even struck by a bullet.

''It's very fortunate that no one was killed,'' said Keith Totten, deputy chief of FAU police.

Graham will likely be charged with aggravated assault and possession of weapon on a college campus. It is still not clear what led to the fight in residence hall 58, Totten added.

As police worked to piece together the night's events, students at FAU's Boca Raton campus were finally allowed to venture outside after hours of seclusion. The campus remained closed until Thursday, but the lockdown, which began less than an hour after the shooting, was lifted about 12:30 p.m.

All Wednesday classes were canceled -- in the middle of final exam week -- but will resume Thursday. Wednesday's exams will be made up Saturday.

Police located Graham after releasing a strikingly clear surveillance photo of the man believed to be the gunman and appealed to the public for help in finding him.

Here's how authorities said it happened:

About 1:15 a.m. Wednesday, a party in an on-campus apartment, which caters to juniors and seniors, turned hostile.

At some point, Graham, who was captured on surveillance video wandering the halls with a beer, opened fire. A man who is not an FAU student suffered a superficial cut in the fracas, although it may not have been from a bullet.

Less than a half-hour later, the campus-wide PA system issued an alert that there was an armed suspect on campus and all students should seek shelter immediately."

Besides wondering just how much getting cut in the fracas hurts, its good to know that it only took them half an hour to alert the campus of the shooting and that the shooter was still at large.

I mean, how much damage can a guy do in 30 minutes, right?
