"Schermiela Palmer had hoped someday to become a lawyer to help people in need.
But today, her parents are filing a $15 million claim against the city, saying they hope their 16-year-old daughter's untimely death helps others by preventing future tragedies.
Schermiela died on a Queens high school track, collapsing shortly after complaining to her gym teacher.
"I don't want to see other kids die from the same thing because of lack of training," Schermiela's father, Elue Palmer, told the Daily News yesterday."
And wouldn't it have been nice if Shermiela's father had told her to lay off the cake and donuts for a while. But of course the parents of obese children share none of the blame when tragedy strikes. The kid was 5'4", weighed 250 pounds, and it's the gym teacher's fault.
