The Founding Fathers...

Contrary to what SOME would have you believe, could be mighty persnickety when it came to mixing government with religion.

"It does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are 20 gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." -Thomas Jefferson

"The government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion." -John Adams

"The United States of America should have a foundation free from the influence of clergy." -George Washington

"Lighthouses are more helpful then churches." -Benjamin Franklin

"In no instance have the churches been guardians of the liberties of the people." -James Madison

Yes, they could be god-fearing men...Franklin notwithstanding, he was a scientist after all...but knew where to draw the line.
