.22 LR
It's cool when I can pass along something halfway decent, and propitious in that Crazy Jay recently chronographed these very rounds... Aguila Super Maximum Ammunition 22 Long Rifle 30 Grain Plated Lead... and returned an average of 1726 fps from a 22" Remington 597.
Midway has them on sale for $2.49 per box of 50, and all the ones I've fired are reasonably accurate, fed, fired, and flung just fine, so do with this info as you will.
When ammo makers engage in a velocity-war all is well with the world. CCI Stingers, my current long rifle fodder, zip merrily along @ 1650 or thereabouts from a 22" barrel, and Aguila upped the ante so I'm awaiting CCI's riposte in order to reclaim the title of World's Fastest 22.
